TOWN NOTICE STURBRIDGE, MA

Sturbridge Tree Warden announces 2018 “adopt a tree” street tree planting program

Sturbridge: Is your front yard a little bare?  Seeing too much white snow covered lawn? Would you like to green it up or add some color and texture? How about providing a source of food for our wildlife?  Then the Sturbridge Tree Warden has a program for you!  Sturbridge Residents can “adopt a tree” as a part of its annual street tree planting Arbor Day program.
Tree Warden Tom Chamberland is offering a free tree to any resident with space in their front yard for a tree or two.  The town will purchase and plant the tree, your adoption duties will be to properly water and mulch the tree for the next three years.    There is a pre-approved tree selection list, and established “right tree in the right place” guidelines. Both of which may be obtained by sending an email inquiry to the Tree Warden at tchamberland@town.sturbridge.ma.us
Deadline for adoption applications is March 14, 2018.  Planting will occur sometime between April 15th and May 15th.   In announcing this year’s “adopt a tree program” Tree Warden Tom Chamberland said “I am pleased to again be able to offer this program to residents as a way to help beautify and enhance our community, along with improving our environment.  Last year, 15 trees were “adopted” by 12 residents.  When you plant a tree, you are leaving something for others to enjoy in the future, much like the mature trees we enjoy so much of today in Sturbridge. “Continuing, Tom said, “If any resident has a question on this program I urge them to send me an email, at tchamberland@town.sturbridge.ma.us or call me at 508-347-2500 X 1410”

SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 2018 TO SUNDAY, MARCH 18, 2018

SATURDAY, MARCH 24, 2018 TO SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2018

For many at Old Sturbridge Village, the first whiff of spring isn't the aroma of spring flowers - it's the smell of wood smoke and maple syrup, a sure sign that the sap is rising and spring is on the way.  Join us for four weekends of our Maple Days event throughout March, where you can see maple sugaring as it was done in early 19th-century rural New England in OSV's working sugar camp.

See the entire sugar-making process, from tapping the trees to "sugaring off," and learn why maple sugar was more commonly used than maple syrup in early New England.

Costumed historians will also cook period foods made with maple products by the hearth at the Village’s Freeman Farm. In addition, the potter and cooper will be making maple related items.

Home School Day

THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 2018

Join us for our March 8 Home School Day! Our workshops this month will focus on work and chores in the 1830s. Children at the time were important members of their family workforce from a young age, helping with farm chores, sewing, cooking, and more. Activities in the Village will allow visitors to explore work in the 19th century and see artifacts from the museum’s collection related to this theme. In addition, stop by our maple sugaring camp to explore one important late-winter chore. Visitors can see the entire sugar-making process--from tapping the trees to "sugaring off”--and learn why maple sugar was more commonly used than maple syrup in early New England.  Try out one of our Make History Guides as you explore on your own or sign up for a special hands-on workshop at the Museum Education Center (see below).

In Village Activities (including with Village admission):

  • A collections show and tell at the Fitch House
  • Help with some 1830s chores
  • Visit the maple sugar camp
  • Try out a Village scavenger hunt

Please check back the week of Home School Day for a more detailed list and a schedule of activities.

Join us for our popular Drover's Roast outdoor dining event, where we prepare a 1700's American trailside feast recalling the days of John Pynchon, the colonies' first cattle drover.  Experience our version of the Drover's Roast as we prepare the feast as you watch; hand rubbed prime ribs of beef with an age old recipe of spices are slowly roasted for hours over a huge fire pit; fritters are made by hand and cooked; chowder of the sea is slow-cooked in cast iron cauldrons over open fires.

These are just the beginning of an endless feast (eight tables long!) including other seasonal entrées and a large variety of hot and cold vegetable dishes. After your feast it's time to enjoy an assortment of delightful baked goods and fresh. home baked shortcake or pies topped with real whipped cream.

As if the feasting weren't enough, there are festivities you can enjoy throughout the day; enjoy horse drawn wagon rides, music and other live entertainment, demonstrations by period crafts people, a Cow Puncher Drink, and more!

SHS Sturbridge Historical Society - February Meeting 2018

Public House Historic Inn on the Sturbridge Common

SAVE THE DATE!

Presentation by Larry Lowenthal - Sturbridge and the Railroads

Mr. Lowenthal a well known local historian, will focus on railroads in this area and describe the travel possibilities they offered and how they influenced local communities.  During the great age of railroads, towns that were not fortunate enough to be on a rail line were affected as much as those that had rail service.  Mr. Lowenthal is a retired historian for the national park service and is the author of several books among them Titanic Railroad and the story on New England's last great railroad war.

Historical Society meetings are free of charge with dessert and meeting room provided by Michael Glick, Publick House Innkeeper.  Our sincere thanks go out to Mr. Glick.

Society annual dues are $10.00 which help support the cost of speakers.  Meetings are held September through May on the fourth Thursday of the month except November and December, November's meeting is held the first Thursday in December.  All meetings start at 7PM.  Public is welcome.

Venture Uxbridge Day Program

670 Douglas St,Uxbridge, MA

Venture Community Services is hosting their first autism services parent and family forum at our Uxbridge Day Program (670 Douglas Street, Uxbridge) on Thursday, February 22nd at 5:30 pm.  We are interested in your input and suggestions!

Venture is looking to determine the needs of the children with autism and their families in the Blackstone Valley region in the areas of clinical support, social and recreational opportunities, life skills development, and vocational options.  We believe that families are our best indication of how we can help – and we would really like to hear from you.  We will be joined by Mike Hyland, President and CEO; Kevin Hughes, Vice President of Day Services and BCBA/LABA; and Kyle Murray, Vice President of Quality Assurance and Clinical Services.

Please RSVP to Paige at pmador@venturecs.org or 774-922-1135 to indicate that you will be attending.  We are also able to provide supervision for your child by a trained staff member while you participate in the meeting, so please include that in your email if you are interested.

We look forward to hearing about how we can help serve your community.
